What Is a Facial Essence and How to Use It in Your Routine
Facial essences may not be the most common skincare product—but they’re incredibly useful for building effective and easy routines (just the way we like them!). But if it’s not a toner, serum, or moisturizer… where does it fit in your skincare routine? Pay close attention—because in this blog we’re answering the most common questions about essences. Don’t miss it!
What Is an Essence in Skincare?
Essences are lightweight, watery skincare products whose main function is to hydrate and prep the skin for the rest of your routine. In addition to hydration, their formulas often include active ingredients with antioxidant or anti-inflammatory benefits. This concept comes from K-beauty (Korean skincare), where essences are used to deliver an extra layer of hydration and prepare the skin for further treatment. But for us, a traditional essence wasn’t quite enough. That’s why when we created Luminous Milk Essence, we decided to push the concept further.
What Makes Luminous Milk Essence So Special?
First and foremost, Luminous Milk Essence is a hybrid between a serum and a moisturizer, making it far more complete than a traditional essence.
Its ultra-light milky texture deeply hydrates and repairs the skin, leaving behind a gorgeous, dewy glass skin finish.
We compare it to a serum because it does more than just moisturize—it also delivers serious treatment benefits thanks to:
- Antioxidants like Vitamin E
- Prebiotics that strengthen the skin barrier
- Peptides with well-aging benefits to improve firmness and reduce fine lines.
In short, Luminous Milk Essence is a multi-functional treatment that hydrates, illuminates, protects, and fights signs of aging—all in one lightweight and effective formula.
How Can You Use Luminous Milk Essence?
Thanks to its complete formula, Luminous is a super versatile product that fits a variety of routines:
- As an all-in-one treatment (hydration + active care) for fast, minimalist routines
- As a moisturizer alternative for oily/combination skin that prefers lighter textures
- As an extra hydration layer for sensitive, dry, or mature skin when your moisturizer isn’t quite enough
Where Does an Essence Fit Into Your Routine?
Generally speaking, when we talk about essences (in the traditional K-beauty sense), they’re applied early in the routine—right after cleansing, and before serums or moisturizers. This helps hydrate and prep the skin for what comes next.
However, Luminous Milk Essence is different. It’s more like a treatment lotion that combines serum and hydration. We designed it this way so you could use it as a stand-alone product or as a moisturizer alternative, which means it also needed more emollient ingredients to lock in hydration and create a protective “film” over the skin. Because of this, if you’re combining Luminous with another serum, you should apply the serum first, then follow with Luminous Milk Essence, to ensure proper absorption.
Here’s how your routine could look depending on how you use it:
- As an all-in-one: Cleanser + Luminous + SPF
- As a moisturizer substitute: Cleanser + Serum (optional) + Luminous + SPF
- As an added hydration layer: Cleanser + Serum + Luminous + Moisturizer + SPF
As you can see, Luminous Milk Essence is perfect for all skin types and seasons—even the same skin might use it as a solo product in the summer and layer it in the winter ;)
So if you haven’t tried this iconic product yet… now’s your moment!
