From molecule to your skin: how high-performance cosmetics are formulated (and why not all of them work)
Surely you've wondered why two "similar" creams can give such different results, and the answer isn't just in marketing or the trendy ingredient. It's in how a cosmetic is formulated, from the first idea to the moment it touches your skin. And this is where our story begins.
It all starts with you, literally. Before talking about molecules, active ingredients, or the lab, we listen to you. We read your messages, analyze your real concerns (sensitive skin, blemishes, breakouts, skin aging, damaged barrier...), and place those needs at the center of the process. Because for us, formulating without understanding the skin is like putting the cart before the horse.
Phase 1: Brainstorming
This is the creative part of cosmetic science. We research clinical studies, scientific publications, and dermatological evidence on active ingredients and their real efficacy on the skin. It's not enough for it to "sound good": we look for effective concentrations, clear mechanisms of action, and active ingredients with scientific backing.
We also analyze suppliers, raw material quality, and, above all, synergies. Because in cosmetic formulation, it's not just about what ingredients you use, but how they interact with each other. Many formulas fail right here: interesting active ingredients, but poorly combined or in irrelevant concentrations. That's why at Two Poles, we dedicate so much time to this phase; nothing is left to chance.
Phase 2: Materializing the product
Once we have the formula defined, we enter the lab. This is one of the most complex challenges: balancing efficacy and sensoriality. A cosmetic can be very powerful, but if it doesn't absorb well, is uncomfortable, or irritates the skin, it doesn't work in real life.
So, we test a thousand textures, evaluate absorption, stability, and compatibility between ingredients. We adjust pH, preservation systems, and vehicles so that the active ingredients reach where they need to go: your skin. This is where many products fall by the wayside.
At the same time, we work on the packaging: functional, sustainable, and consistent with our essence. Without adding unnecessary costs that don't provide real value to the formula (because we prefer to invest in the inside, not just what's visible).

Phase 3: Testing and trials
This part isn't as glamorous, but it's the most important. And that's because, before moving forward, each formula undergoes a lot of tests:
- Stability test (to ensure the product maintains its efficacy over time).
- Safety and skin compatibility test.
- Efficacy test, to check that it delivers on its promises.
- Dermatological test on sensitive skin, because for us, good tolerability for all skin types is non-negotiable.
Only formulas that pass all these filters continue. And yes, this takes months. But rushing could be costly for the skin, and we absolutely don't want that.
Phase 4: Market launch
After a lot of invisible work, the time finally comes to share it with you. As you can see, it's not an improvised launch: it's the result of a clinical, technical, and human process designed to offer high-performance cosmetics, with a scientific basis and real results.

Phase 5: First reviews
And we come full circle, back to the beginning: listening to you. We read your opinions, analyze how your skin responds, and what impact each product has had. Your feedback isn't just a comment: it's an active part of our continuous improvement process.
For us, formulating isn't about following trends, but about understanding the skin, respecting science, and listening to those who wear it every day.
So now you know why not all cosmetics work... and what's behind those that do. If you want us to help you create an effective routine, detailed for your specific case, write to us and we'll be happy to help.
Warmly,
I'll see you on @twopolescosmetics & @partners.incream
