How Travel Affects Your Skin
Have you noticed how traveling affects your skin? When we travel, our skin is exposed to countless external factors it’s not used to—so it’s no surprise that your vacation can take a toll on your complexion, even when you’re just getting away to relax!
This can happen no matter how you travel, but flying in particular can lead to breakouts, dehydration, or accelerated photoaging. Here’s why—and how to prevent it:
Dehydration
Prolonged exposure to recirculated air on airplanes causes water loss in the skin, leading to deep dehydration.
To prevent this, the best thing you can do is give your skin a hydration boost before your flight and use products that help minimize transepidermal water loss (aka when moisture "evaporates").
We know—it sounds complicated, but trust us, it’s super simple, friend. The night before, treat your skin to some extra TLC with a hydrating, soothing, and regenerating mask like Midnight Mask.
PRO TIP: Take it with you on vacation and apply it during your stay—it’ll help restore hydration and soothe your skin after too much sun (perfect post-beach!).
And to make sure your skin doesn’t lose moisture while traveling, using a well-formulated, rich moisturizer is key (as we discussed in this blog). In this case, we especially recommend one with ceramides, since they act as a barrier to lock in hydration.
Cloud Moisturizer is a great choice—it contains 0.2% pure, high-quality Ceramide NP, and it’s so lightweight you’ll barely feel it on your skin!
Breakouts
When skin becomes dehydrated, it tries to compensate by producing excess sebum. That’s why a proper cleanse—one that removes that buildup of oil, dirt, makeup, and pollution—is key. This helps prevent clogged pores, which often lead to breakouts and blackheads.
So, the best way to avoid breakouts while traveling (aside from watching your diet) is double cleansing. Remember, oil is the only cleanser that can truly penetrate and deeply purify pores!
Premature Aging
Yes, friend, your getaway might leave you with more fine lines, dark spots, and skin that looks noticeably older.
Sun exposure is behind most visible signs of aging (spots, wrinkles, sagging, etc.). That’s why it’s crucial to remember that UV intensity increases at higher altitudes—and UVA rays can even penetrate airplane windows. So, an antioxidant treatment and plenty of sunscreen will be your best allies.
And without a doubt, the best antioxidant treatment to apply before your trip is Morning Glow, which packs the two most sought-after antioxidants—vitamin C and niacinamide—in the same serum!
But don’t worry—with this in mind, you’ll surely notice a fresher, brighter look on your next trip!
