What Does Vitamin C Do and Why You Need It in Your Skincare Routine
Vitamin C is probably one of the most widely used ingredients in skincare—but do you know why it’s so loved?
This powerhouse active comes with a long list of benefits, so today we’re breaking down what Vitamin C can really do for your skin:
- Powerful Antioxidant. Vitamin C is one of the best-known antioxidants. It helps protect your skin from free radicals and UV radiation—preventing the signs of aging caused by sun exposure (aka photoaging).
- Brightens Dark Spots. It improves hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production.
- Evens Out Skin Tone & Boosts Radiance. Perfect for dull or uneven skin—it leaves your complexion looking luminous and fresh.
- Well-Aging Support. It boosts collagen and elastin production, which helps firm the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
The only downside of pure Vitamin C is that it’s a powerful yet unstable ingredient, which has to be formulated at a very low pH—and for that reason, it can be slightly irritating for sensitive skin. Plus, it oxidizes very quickly, which makes it hard to create a large-size product (like a serum) that stays stable.
But don’t worry, friend—there’s a way to get all the benefits without the irritation: stabilized Vitamin C.
What is stabilized Vitamin C?
Stabilized or derivative Vitamin C is a version of the ingredient that’s adapted to a pH closer to our skin’s, which makes it much more tolerable for all skin types, and allows it to stay fresh longer without oxidizing.
That said, as with anything—not all stabilized Vitamin C is created equal. Some forms are basic, while others have shown in scientific studies to offer effects incredibly similar to pure Vitamin C. Can you guess which ones we chose for our Morning Glow?
Of course—we went with the most powerful ones based on the result we were after: an antioxidant serum that brightens dark spots, reduces signs of premature aging (like fine lines and loss of firmness), and is super lightweight.
For that, one standout stabilized Vitamin C is 3-O Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, which helps fade dark spots and boosts collagen and elastin production—improving skin firmness. Another great one is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, which not only delivers the same benefits but also has antimicrobial properties. In other words, it’s the best Vitamin C option for combination to oily skin or breakout-prone skin, because it helps regulate oil and prevent blemishes.
As you might’ve guessed—you’ll find both of them in our best-selling serum: Morning Glow.
Vitamin C and sun: can I use it during the day or in summer?
The idea that Vitamin C can’t be used in sunlight is a myth that comes from a small misunderstanding. In fact, as we’ve seen, it’s a powerful antioxidant—which means Vitamin C actually helps protect the skin from sun exposure. That said, always follow up with sunscreen!
Does Vitamin C brighten dark circles?
Vitamin C can be a great ally for your under-eye area—but be careful what you use. It needs to be specially formulated for this delicate area, so ideally, you’ll want to look for eye creams with stabilized Vitamin C, like our The Eyeconic Cream, to make sure your under-eye area can tolerate it well.
The main benefits of Vitamin C for the eye contour are two: on the one hand, it improves fine lines, firmness, and hollow dark circles thanks to its anti-aging power through collagen stimulation. And on the other, Vitamin C is ideal for lightening brown (pigmented) dark circles, because of its brightening and depigmenting properties.
Now that you know all the properties and benefits Vitamin C has for your skin, you’re probably ready to start using it in your routine, right?
With the two products we mentioned above, it’s super easy and convenient to use Vitamin C every day. And if you’re left with any questions about which one is best for you, just message us—we’re always happy to help.
